How Much can a 10x12 Shed Hold?

The 10×12 sheds are most often used for storage of various kinds. Some folks use them for storing garden tools and other household items. They are great for storing lawnmowers, bicycles, snowblowers, and other garden tools. Note the layout showing how a 10×12 storage shed floorplan with a mid-sized lawnmower and a few other garden tools.

Can I get More Space out of my 10×12 Storage Shed?

You might think that a 10×12 shed is a 10×12 shed and there is no way to get more space than the 120 square feet in the building. But think again. Several popular additions can give you more space inside your storage shed.

120 sq ft of Extra Space

Here is how you can get more space out of your 10×12 storage shed.

  1. Add lofts. If you add two 3’ lofts on the gable ends of the shed, that will give you an additional 80 square feet of storage space. Due to the roofline of the Dutch Barn, the loft space in a 10×12 Dutch Barn will be much more useful than in The Workshop or The Classic Workshop. If you want to learn more about sheds with lofts, click here.
  2. Add Shelves. You can also add two shelves on either end of the 10×12 shed. If you add two 18” shelves along each 10’ side of the shed, you will get an additional 60 square feet of storage space inside your building.

You now have lofts and shelves that equal the amount of floor space in a 10×12 shed. This means you will be able to keep your shed much more organized by storing things on shelves and in the loft and you won’t have to trip over stuff on the floor every time you enter your building!

A She Shed

She Sheds have been in high demand over the past five years. They can be a quiet place for a busy mother to get away and work on a hobby or a way for a wife to create her own unique space that fits her taste just so. A 10×12 storage shed can readily be converted into a unique small She Shed for just that.

If you do plan to insulate the building, consider upgrading the windows to an insulated window and find out your options for an insulated floor. A shed floor is much more difficult to insulate after the fact than it is to do during the building process.

How to Turn a Shed Into a Game Room

how to turn a shed into a game room

One popular thing to do is turn a storage shed into a game room. Game rooms can a fantastic place to relax, hang out with friends, or host parties. They require very little effort to create and the enjoyment will last for years. In this post, we will discuss how to finish out your shed, where to get equipment, and adding finishing touches.

Finishing Your Shed

The first step in designing a game room is finishing your shed. This can be a fairly easy to very in-depth project, depending on what you are going for. A fully finished game room with all the amenities will take quite a bit of work. It may be worth hiring someone with experience if this is what you want. But if all you need is a space that is nice enough to hang out in, then it can very easily be a DIY project. Plus, you could also add a loft to your shed so that you can nicely stow away any extra storage items. To learn more about sheds with lofts, click here.

There are lots of different things you can do to spruce up your shed. Finishing the walls and floors is a great first step. Other ideas could include adding electricity and plumbing, painting, etc. Rather than explain all of these steps here, visit this blog post. It will explain everything you need to completely finish your shed.

Setting up the Game Room

Setting up your game room is simply a matter of deciding what type of game room you want and then gathering the necessary equipment. You have several options for types of game rooms:

Once you’ve decided on the type of game room you want, you’ll need to find the best places to get your equipment. If you are looking for board & card games, Amazon.com has a great selection of games at a competitive price. However, if you do happen to have a board game shop in your area, we would highly recommend shopping there. Not only do board game shops carry an expansive and unique selection of games, but shopping there allows you to support a local business.

If you want to purchase a pool table, ping pong table, etc., some of your best options are sporting goods centers. But, if you are looking for some cheaper options, it’s always worth checking Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for used options. Small equipment like paddles and balls can be purchased on Amazon or at sporting goods centers.

If you plan to set up an e-gaming room, you most likely have much of the equipment you need. However, Amazon can be a great resource if you need more. Lounge and office chairs, a desk, consoles, computers, keyboards, and mice are all available on Amazon.

Finishing Touches

Once you have finished out your shed and added the equipment you want, you are basically done. But if you want to instill a little mood into your game room, some decorations can go a long way. For ideas, sites like Pinterest can an excellent resource. Here is one Pinterest board to get you started. Looking for other creative ideas for a storage shed? See our post on 10×12 storage shed uses and let your creative juices start running! Or, you could learn more about pre-built storage sheds. As a side note, we don’t just offer sheds. We also offer horse barns, which you can read about here.

Happy gaming and we hope you love your new game room.

How to Turn a Shed into an Airbnb

shed airbnb

In the past several years, Airbnb has become a popular alternative to traditional hotels and guesthouses. They are often cheaper and provide guests with extra spaces not usually available in hotels such as a kitchen. The increase in demand for Airbnb rental options means that it can be a great way to make a little extra money. Any buildings or even rooms can fairly easily be converted a space to rent out. But what if you don’t have any extra space right now but are still interested in making some money on Airbnb?

A great, affordable option is a shed. If you don’t believe us, see for yourself. Here is a link to an Airbnb rental that is a tool shed converted into a tiny home. Tons of people have converted sheds into tiny homes. It’s nothing new. In this article, we’ll describe the process for converting a storage shed into a tiny home you can rent out on Airbnb

Important Note

Before starting the process of converting a shed into an Airbnb, it is very important that you stop by your county building and codes office to see what permits and building requirements they expect. Depending on your area, this may be nothing or it may be quite a lot. Rather than waiting to do this further down road, it is best to get everything taken care of up front.

Choosing a Shed

One of your important first steps in starting Airbnb guesthouse from a shed is to pick out a shed if you don’t already have one. This means choosing the right style, size, and add-on features.

As far as shed styles go, there isn’t really one right option. Cabin sheds can be a great choice because they have porches that can be a great addition to your tiny home. Dutch barns and Classic workshop sheds can also be good options. Ultimately it is a matter of personal taste and what looks good on your property. Do a little bit of shopping around to make sure you find one that suits you.

Choosing a Shed Size

When choosing a shed size, you need to make sure you get something that is big enough to hold a kitchen and bathroom. We wouldn’t recommend getting anything smaller than a 14×20. It really depends on how much you want to include in your tiny home. If you want to add more than just the bare essentials, we would recommend a shed that is 14×28 or larger.

Choosing Add-On Options

There are a few add-on options that should definitely be included in your tiny home. One is a loft. Lofts are a great way to make some extra space for storage or sleeping. Another add-on that should be included is an electrical package. This can make your work in finishing out your shed much easier. Other add-ons that you can include are extra windows, insulated doors, and even flower boxes.

Converting Your Shed Into an Airbnb

Now comes the fun part: actually converting your shed into a tiny home. This is going to be the most time consuming and difficult part of the process. If you have absolutely no experience in carpentry, it might be worth hiring someone to help you or doing some study before starting on this part. There are lots of YouTube videos that provide lots of helpful information.

If you would like to just learn more about pre-built storage sheds in general, you can read our comprehensive guide on them.

This section will lay out the steps necessary for converting your shed into a tiny house. However, rather than describing how to do each step, we’ll link out to various resources that will walk you through each step.

1. Create floor plans.

Draw out very detailed floor plans including every room in your tiny house. Make sure you include even minor details such as an AC, heating, etc. You may want to open up an area in a wall for an AC or you might just want to put it in a window. You’ll think through every detail in advance so you don’t end up skipping a step and having to undo work.

2. Install electrical & plumbing.

This can be a fairly difficult job so it may be worth hiring a professional. But if you prefer DIY, here are a few videos to get you going.

Plumbing

3. Install wall insulation.

4. Add walls framing for extra rooms.

Adding a bathroom

5. Install drywall or plywood to interior.

6. Paint the shed interior.

This part is fairly easy so no videos. Feel free to Google search though.

7. Install cabinets and counters.

8. Add kitchen, bathroom, and other house appliances.

Toilet

Sink

9. Lay flooring

10. Add heating and AC

We would recommend simply adding a window AC and electric heater because it is much simpler. However, feel free to use your own methods.

11. Add furniture and interior decor.

Now is the time to really make your shed shine. Bring in furniture, decorations, and whatever makes your new Airbnb feel like a home. You can use websites like Pinterest or Home & Gardens to get inspiration.

With a two-story building, you can store smaller items upstairs, then store a vehicle or ATVs downstairs. Or make the first floor a workshop.

You’ve invested a lot of money. You enjoy your toys. Take care of them and make sure they are secure in a quality storage building. Don’t let them get stolen.

82. Golf Cart Cover

Get a storage shed with taller doors to allow you to pull the golf cart inside and out of the weather. The seats will be dry the next time you use it, and no birds should have adorned it.

83. Chemical Secure Storage

Follow regulations and contain chemicals, sprays, and other hazardous materials. Add a custom floor and locks for spill containment and extra protection.

84. Sports gear

Know exactly where your bats, gloves, helmets, golf clubs, and other sports equipment is located with an organized storage building.

85. Barn for Tractors & Equipment

Tractors and implements need protection from the weather. A large storage shed, portable garage, or carport can be an affordable way to keep your equipment in great working condition.

Keep those bikes looking shiny and new. Store them for the winter. Add a couch and fridge and turn it into the ultimate hangout.

If you live by a lake or the ocean, you probably have boats and other water equipment that you need to store. Get a storage shed to keep everything from surfboards to kayaks to life jackets.

88. Community Garden

Get to know your neighbors, and work productively to feed your families – all while learning about the earth. Store your tools and supplies in a shed, then wait for those nourishing plants to grow.

89. Lean-To Storage

If you need a small amount of storage, build a lean-to structure onto an existing building. Then close in the sides, add a door, and have the compact storage you need.

90. Children’s Toy “Garage”

Teach your children responsibility, and keep their toys out of the main garage with their own little storage shed “garage.” Plus, they will always know where to find their favorite toys – IF they put them away last time.

91. Store Pet Food and Supplies

You can also use a storage building for pet feed and grooming supplies. Keep the feed dry, safe from rodents, and ready for your pet’s next meal.

An Easy Guide to Your Garden Shed For 2024

garden shed guide

Owning a garden shed can seem like a big job. But I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be. In fact, being a shed owner can be very easy and rewarding. If you already own a garden shed or are thinking of purchasing one, this garden shed guide is perfect for you.

Choosing a Shed

Choosing the Right Shed Size

Choosing the right size shed can be one of the most difficult decisions in the shed buying process. Here are a few things to consider when choosing a shed size:

  1. What you will be storing
      • If you plan to store tools or other small items, an 8×8 Mini Barn may work just fine. However, if you are planning on storing a zero turn mower, you might consider a 10×12 shed or larger.
  2. Space in your yard or garden
    • Most likely this will not be an issue but if you have a specific place you want to put your shed, you’ll need to consider if there is plenty of space.
  3. Give yourself room to grow
    • You most likely have ideas for what you want to currently use your shed. But who knows? Maybe further down the road you’ll decide that you want to do more. It might be a good idea to give yourself a little more space then you need in anticipation of this. One way to provide more room is to add a loft to your shed. Choosing the Right Siding

There are several different shed siding options available but the most popular are wood and metal. Neither of them is necessarily any better than the other. Here’s some of the advantages of metal and wood siding.

Wood siding

  1. More easily customized
  2. Generally more attractive
  3. Cheaper

Metal siding

  1. Fire resistant
  2. More durable
